A lovely group of eight young women spent the week of July 30 serving, praying and sharing good times with us at Mount Alvernia in Millvale, Pennsylvania as part of our annual Summer Service Camp.

The week began with a prayer service centering on “The Canticle of the Creatures” which set the Franciscan tone for the week. Afterwards, each girl began creating a pillow with a Scripture verse on it as a special remembrance from the week.

The young women spent the rest of the week praying and serving in the Franciscan tradition while helping people in need. Their outreach included preparing and serving lunch and supper at Bethlehem Haven in downtown Pittsburgh, which provides a continuum of care for homeless women that leads to self-sufficiency. The girls prepared the meals at Evergreen House under the watchful eye of Sister Marie Grace Blum and served the women at the haven. At the western Pennsylvania regional house, the group helped sisters pack for their move to The Waters – a big job! They also enjoyed a “coffee break” with senior sisters, an ice-cream social and presentations by our sisters about their ministries. Both the young women and sisters experienced a very happy week together. Many are looking forward to next summer!
