The Magi were persons of knowledge and wisdom. Their intelligence was the fruit of their scientific education, which had provided them with a clear understanding of the theories of their day, about the meaning of the presence and movements of celestial bodies. Their wisdom emanated from their faithfulness to a spiritual power beyond them, speaking to them through the actions of nature and ancient prophecies, which drew them to follow a star to seek out a king who would lead them to experience all they hoped for. And it was no accident that they found the star—they had long been watching the heavens to help them recognize and ultimately understand their destiny.
The appearance of a magnificent light, more brilliant than any they had seen, matched a prophecy that told of a celestial beacon leading to the presence of a Great King. Sighting this Star impelled them to follow its light and learn what it would reveal. Their hope, rooted in deep faith, led them onward to find and honor this precious One, this tiny pauper King, robed only in the magnificence of Love, and its total abandonment to the human condition. The One they found became the Fulfillment of their hopes, a Treasure beyond their imagining. It was His Light that lit The Star they followed; it was He Who was The Star.
Why follow The Star now? Because It is the Light of Truth, and the Fire of Love for us today. And because it is only in seeking and knowing the Truth and Love of The Star that we can come to understand who we truly are and what is ours to do – that we can be, in our actions, beacons of hope who carry within us the Light that can heal our world.
I follow The Star, because I cannot NOT follow The Star.
