Since 2009, volunteer “cuddler” Sister Frances Joseph Piazza has been providing tender, loving care to babies suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome at Sisters Hospital in Buffalo. “I rock them, pat them on the back, talk to them …” she says. “Sometimes I bring them little presents, like a bow for their hair or a headband.”
A registered nurse specializing in maternal and child health, Sister Frances says she wakes up each morning at 4 a.m. and prays the rosary for the babies on the unit. She cherishes her scrapbook with photos of all the babies she’s cared for through the years, and says she is always happy when mothers bring her former patients to visit her at St. Mary of the Angels convent.
