S. Eileen Derrick Finds Peace in Writing Haiku

S. Eileen Derrick appreciates the beauty of creation and finds peaceful moments reflecting on it while writing haiku.

#1. A path beckons me

Ped’ling my bike like a tyke

     Toward infinity.

#2. Diamonds on water

      Riches surround and abound

      So many sparkles!

#3. Rufus, a goofus

Greets morning rays of the day

      Sitting on the porch

#4. Sun ray heat rises

Warm Bold breaks the crusted Cold

      Snow scapes meet their foe.

S. Margaret Carney Recommends a Book

S. Margaret Carney sparks interest in creation by recommending the book “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” by Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Dillard. Published in 1974, this book marked Dillard’s dramatic introduction to truly seeing, sensing, and marveling at the natural world. Dillard had an uncanny ability to combine scientific knowledge and a faith-filled wonder at the gifts of Creation. S. Margaret says, “She helped me see that I could be a ‘pilgrim’ in nature, even though my childhood was in a city neighborhood where there were no role models for making such an effort.” You can often find copies in used bookstores.

S. Martha Torbik Encourages to Pray the Creation Stations of the Cross

On the 24th of each month, S. Marth Torbik and a group of Sisters from the Villa pray the Stations of the Cross for Peace in Ukraine. During the Season of Creation, from September 1 to October 4, we will gather on the 24th of this month to pray the Stations of the Cross while reflecting on the Care of Creation. S. Martha invites all to join them in prayer and recommends two Stations of the Cross videos that relate to Laudato Si.

Introduction

We are beginning this walk with our Creator, along with His creation, in 14 stations. The real beauty is the Creator himself, as St. Augustine expresses in his confessions: “late have I loved thee, oh beauty so ancient so new.”

The beauty of creation is an overflow of the beauty of the Creator himself. We are now going to walk along this way of beauty that the Creator walked for 33 years. The entire creation is his visible footprint and handiwork that we see every day. As we walk through these stations of creation, let us be reminded of our responsibilities as co-creators and stewards of our common home. We walk this way as a single family, where all of us are interconnected and responsible to one another and to everything.
