Left to right: Sister Laurine McDonald and
Lt. Ann Vino (1944)
In tribute to a lifetime of humanitarian service, Catherine Bertini made a leadership gift to the sisters’ retirement fund that named the Franciscan Villa Director of Nursing Office in memory of her great Aunt Anna Farrell, RN, her mother Ann Vino Bertini, RN, and her aunt Col. Jane M. Vino, USAF, RN; and a sister bedroom in Sister Laurine McDonald’s honor, who was like another aunt to her.
When Ann and Jane Vino needed a role model, they had to look no further than their Aunt Anna, whom they called Nana, a dedicated nurse. Both girls chose to follow in her footsteps, graduating as RN’s. Ann first met Sister Laurine McDonald, a fellow student and Sister of St. Francis, while attending St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing together in 1941. Their friendship would last a lifetime.
Ann enlisted in the US Army in 1944 and, after the war, was a nurse at Biggs Memorial Hospital, a state tuberculosis sanitarium in Ithaca, NY. Jane became an Air Force nurse and rose to be Deputy Chief of the Air Force Nurse Corps. Meanwhile, Sister Laurine became one of the first cardiac operating room nurses at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and followed her nursing ministry to assignments in Hawaii, Africa and Peru.
“Growing up, Sister Laurine was like another aunt,” recalled Catherine Bertini. “She and my mom (Ann) were so close. I was blessed to be surrounded with the love and example of such remarkable women – my mom, Aunt Jane, Nana, and Sister Laurine.”
In turn, Catherine pursued her own distinguished career, most notably as Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program. She is also a World Food Prize laureate and is currently a Professor of Public Administration and International Affairs at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs of Syracuse University.
In tribute to this legacy of humanitarian service, Catherine made a leadership gift to the sisters’ retirement fund that named the Franciscan Villa Director of Nursing Office in memory of Anna Farrell, RN, Ann Vino Bertini, RN, and Col.
