Knit and crochet while bringing comfort to others.
The prayer shawl ministry in the congregation is an opportunity to use your hands in creating a shawl for persons in need of comfort and healing for any number or reasons: physical illness, emotional tragedies, spiritual struggles or simply a need for a warm embrace. Sisters, Franciscan associates and friends of the sisters meet monthly to knit, crochet and pray together.
The inspiration for this ministry is based on Pslam 139 which states, “You created my inmost self, knit me together in my mother’s womb. For so many marvels I thank you; a wonder am I, and all your works are wonders.”
Prayer shawl recipients
Since this ministry began in 2002, 1,600 shawls have been distributed throughout the U.S. as far south as Florida, west as far as Texas and Utah and north New England. Approximately 145 shawls are created each year. They are given to people in nursing homes, health centers, pastoral care departments, and on occasion for a special celebration. The shawls are accompanied with a card explaining the ministry and the reason why the shawl is being given along with words of comfort and love for the recipient.
