Mount Alvernia Day Care

Located at Mount Alvernia in Millvale, Pa., Mount Alvernia Day Care and Learning Center offers programs for children from six weeks to 12 years in an environment that nurtures your child’s mind, body and spirit.

At Mount Alvernia, our support for your child goes well beyond a day of play, snacks and naps. From the “intentional teaching” opportunities in the daily routine of our infants to the before and after school programs for older children, we focus on helping your child develop the emotional, social, cognitive and physical skills needed for a successful life.

Our programs are licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services; we are a member of Pennsylvania’s Keystone Stars program and we are a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities.

Programs

Ages: 6 weeks to 12 months

Our center offers two infant rooms, one for the littlest of our infants, the other for mobile infants. This allows our non-crawlers to grow and develop in a safe environment while practicing their rolling over and tummy time skills. It also gives our older infants the freedom to explore, learn and develop.

All our infants form trusting relationships with our nurturing staff in order to progress into having secure attachments. Throughout the infants’ daily routine, there are many opportunities for “intentional teaching”.

Our combination of daily staffing and volunteers helps Mount Alvernia exceed Pennsylvania’s minimum requirement of one caregiver to every four babies.

Ages: 12 months to 36 months

At Mount Alvernia, we divide our Young Toddler program into two age classes to better meet the development needs of these children.

Our One Year Old program, for toddlers aged 12 to 24 months, is designed to help the children gain control over their motor skills, make and carry out decisions, cope with problems, wait with patience, and to have a feeling of good will and pride. The children to staff ratio is five to one.

For children aged 24 to 36 months, our Two Year Old program provides an encouraging, nurturing environment that supports physical, cognitive, social, emotional and creative development, all while fostering a positive sense of self and independence.

The staff ratio is six older toddlers for every one caregiver.

Ages: 3 to 4 years

Both our Younger Pre-school and Older Pre-school program serve children in this age group. Here we work with children on developing the social skills needed to interact with others in their age group. Learning to solve problems with their peers, for example, helps preschoolers develop appropriate language skills. Children also practice independent skills and we begin pre-reading and pre-writing activities. Learning to recognize letters, numbers, shapes, and colors are a big part of your preschoolers’ day.

The staff ratio also is ten children per staff member.

While similar to our Pre-school program, Mount Alvernia’s Pre-kindergarten program places additional emphasis on learning to better prepare children for Kindergarten the following year. Children work on recognizing sight words and differentiating between upper and lowercase letters in advance of learning to read. Beginning sounds and basic math concepts also are introduced as well as self-help skills and social and emotional development. We recognize the importance of play as a means of learning through group games and activities, and music enrichment is added to the program.

The staff ratio also is ten children per staff member.

Open to primary and elementary school children who ride buses provided by the Shaler School District (Please check with your child’s school to determine if they bus to Mount Alvernia.)

Mount Alvernia Day Care offers a safe, stress-free environment for children who need a place to go before or after regular school hours or during the summer months. Activities are individually chosen and staff will help your child with homework if you request assistance.

The staff ratio is twelve children per staff member.
