We were watching NFL Tonight when my friend Terry asked a simple but thoughtful question: “Why did the football player with the ball keep running into so many defenders?” She pointed out that there was a clear opening on the field that he could have used to avoid players in his way. From her perspective, the question made sense, and we explained why the player didn’t take that route. We told her that, as viewers watching from home, we had a different perspective than the players on the field. The camera showed us a bird’s-eye view of the entire field; we saw every player and every open space. But the players on the field were at ground level. They didn’t have the luxury of seeing the bigger picture. They could only see what was in front of them, and from their viewpoint, the opening Terry noticed might not have been as noticeable.
As the game continued, I started to think about how this situation reflects life. Like the players on the field, we often find ourselves in situations where we can’t see the whole picture. Our lives are filled with moments when we feel confused, uncertain, or unsure about our direction. Like the players, we are stuck at ground level, able to see a small part of the bigger plan. This can be frustrating. We look around and wonder why things are happening the way they are. We might see paths we think we should take, but don’t understand why we can’t reach them.
This is where our faith in God becomes essential. Even though we can’t see the entire picture, God, our Father in Heaven, has a perspective we can trust. He sees everything from above. He knows the plan for our lives, even the parts we don’t understand. Just like the NFL game camera captures the entire field, God sees the full scope of our lives – every detail, every challenge, every joy, and every opportunity. We may not be able to see beyond our next step, but He already knows the result. We can find comfort in knowing that even in our confusion, He is guiding us, step by step, in the right direction.
This reflection recalls a verse from the Bible, Isaiah 55:8-9: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” When we feel lost or unsure, this verse is a reminder that God’s ways are higher and wiser than ours. Just as the players on the field couldn’t see the entire game, we, from our limited human perspective, can’t fully understand everything happening in our lives. But God, who is above and beyond, sees it clearly.
This knowledge should give us peace. When life feels overwhelming, or we are unsure about our choices, we can trust that God is leading us with wisdom and love. We may not always understand the path ahead, but we can trust He does. His plan for us is greater than anything we can imagine, and His love for us is constant. Even in moments of confusion, we can rest in the assurance that God sees the whole picture and guides us every step of the way.
