Hard work. Conversion. Prayer. Fun. These are words that the young women who participated in Franciscans in Action in Martin, Kentucky this summer used to describe their experience. The women came from near and far: Meg, from the Pittsburgh area, and Kalo, Kalona, Moni, Rena and Jojo from Honolulu.

Sisters Donna McGartland, Cheryl Wint, Laura Hackenberg and Nicolette Vennaro led the group in building a 28-foot wheel chair ramp for Ruby and David. David has trouble walking and cannot leave his porch which is in very poor condition. The team reinforced the existing porch and built the ramp so that now David can leave his house. David and Ruby were so happy for this new found freedom that the ramp provided.

This week-long service program is not all about building ramps. It is also about building a strong team, growing in faith, and sharing in a sense of accomplishment. Each day, the members took turns leading morning and evening prayer, cooking, and cleaning. Every evening during prayer, there was heart sharing to help process the experiences of the day and reflect upon God’s presence throughout the day.
