Adopt a Sister
A Prayer Companion Program
As an adoption brings joy to the hearts of a child and the adopting couple, other adoptions have enlivened our Sisters of St. Francis. In this case, however, the people being adopted are our sisters themselves. These adoptions are part of our Adopt A Sister Program - a prayer companion program.
For well over a century, our sisters have received prayer requests from the general public and have offered prayers of praise and petition to God on their behalf. The Adopt A Sister program is a personalized form of this tradition. It allows members of the public to "adopt" a specific sister. The adopter and the adopted sister is welcome to correspond with the sister, visit her and pray for her. In return, the sister takes a special interest in her adopter's life, and is committed to praying for his or her intentions.
A majority of our adopted sisters are retired. This program gives our sisters a renewed sense of service, and their relationships with others have helped to make them feel reconnected with people they care so much about. The program has also helped to make the sisters more aware of the pain people are experiencing, and of the prayer needs that people have.
Many people hunger to have someone praying for them as they go through a divorce, endure a battle with cancer or some other disease, or are in the midst of a trying situation. The Adopt A Sister Program has been rewarding for both our adopters and our sisters, as they realize they are cared for and prayed for.
Anyone who is interested in having such a special prayer relationship can adopt one of our sisters. Adopters receive a certificate, the sister's picture and a short biography of the sister. Adopters can choose a specific sister or have one chosen for them. Simply fill in the form and e-mail it to us. We will then assign a sister to you which hopefully will be the beginning of a meaningful prayer companionship for you.
